Profile

Lissi Athanasiou-Krikelis, PhD

Dr. Athanasiou-Krikelis is Assistant Professor of English at New York Institute of Technology, in New York City, where she teaches academic writing and literature. Her areas of interest include postmodern metafiction, narrative theory, and contemporary Greek literature, including both adult and children’s fiction.

Dr. Athanasiou-Krikelis’s dissertation, Postmodern Metafiction, set the framework for her research on adult metafiction examining contemporary American and Greek texts. Stories about storytelling, characters who know they are characters in a book, and readers or authors appearing inside the narrative space of a text are some of the narrative types that Dr. Athanasiou-Krikelis studies.

While teaching a course on Children’s Literature at NYIT in 2015, she decided to expand her research into the field of metafiction and Children’s Literature, an area in which she has grown as a scholar. More recently, Dr. Athanasiou-Krikelis began investigating the image of the “other” and the representation of the national self in children’s books and young-adult novels. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Modern Greek Studies, Lion and the Unicorn, Bookbird, and Children’s Literature Quarterly, journal of International Research in Children’s Literature, Narrative. She has also published book reviews, has served as a peer reviewer, and has presented at various national and international conferences.

Dr. Athanasiou-Krikelis received her bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Comparative Literature from Queen’s College, City University of New York, her master’s in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and her doctorate in Comparative Literature from The Graduate Center, City University of New York.
